The market square is the centre of the old town, framed by a circle of houses dating from five centuries. Centerpiece is the Linz town hall, built between 1517 and 1527 and the fountain “ Ratsbrunnen ”, which represents the people and the council.
The town hall was built in 1561-1574. A medieval mikveh, a Jewish cult bath, is located under today's meeting room. The water level of the bath rises and falls with the Rhine level even today. The city library is also housed in the building.
