Oberwesel and Bacharach are among the most beautiful places in the Middle Rhine Valley. On the one hand, because of the city walls that once surrounded them, much of which are still preserved. On the other hand, because of the two castles (Schönburg and Burg Stahleck). And thirdly, because of their location in the Middle Rhine Valley, often praised by many as the Grand Canyon of Romance. For 15 years, the left bank Rheinburgenweg has accompanied the river from Bingen to Remagen. The stage from Bacharach to Oberwesel is one of the most varied sections of this premium route.

Wolfgang Blum, nature and landscape guide as well as UNESCO World Heritage Ambassador, will accompany hikers on the BUGA hiking weekend (Sunday, May 11) along the Rheinburgenweg stage and share stories from the region along the way. After the greeting at Bacharach Station, participants stroll through the town to the romantic painter's corner. Here begins the steep ascent over more than 200 steps via the Orionsteig up to the Heinrich-Heine viewpoint. What follows is pure enjoyment hiking along the "edge" of Father Rhine. In a constant up and down, wonderful viewpoints line up, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Middle Rhine Valley.

Just before the end of the hike, one last highlight awaits: Schönburg. From the castle's interior, a narrow path leads over the rocky ridge of the Elfenlay, partly over steps with railings, down to Oberwesel, where the tour ends at the marketplace.

The hike (14.5 kilometers, 385 meters of elevation gain) lasts six hours, including several information stops and a rest with backpacks. It ends at the marketplace in Oberwesel. Participation is free, with a DVV fee of €3 at the start. Each participant must bring their own drinks and snacks. No registration is required. The tour takes place in all weather conditions.
