Festival of the currywurst

It's all about the currywurst. On Luisenplatz in the city centre, a conspicuous number of currywurst stalls will be serving up this delicious calorie bomb. It will be interesting to see what savoury variations the traders come up with. And on Sunday, Neuwied's traders invite you to an open Sunday from 1 pm to 6 pm.

Even star chefs pay homage to the classic snack How do you actually come up with the idea of organising a three-day festival for currywurst? Admittedly, it's a bit weird. But it's also pretty successful. In 2007, the Currywurst Festival attracted visitors in droves to the city centre of Neuwied for the first time. At the time, it was still accompanied by a loud and gesticulating programme of market criers. However, this supporting programme disappeared after a few years, but the festival attracted more and more currywurst vendors.

The witty idea, but also the date in January, i.e. at a time when there is very little on offer "open air", were certainly reasons for the success. And not to forget: It was all about the sausage, the currywurst to be precise. And it obviously has something of a cult status. Over the years, the recipes have become increasingly unusual. Sometimes Asian with cold peanut sauce, as a kebab variant, in a baguette with sauerkraut or vegan creations with tofu and banana. For the particularly hard-boiled, there are ultra-spicy sauces and, of course, the classic method of preparation is still very popular.
