Salkellerei
Hochstraße, 56112 Lahnstein
Salkellerei,Winery of the former Oberlahnsteiner Winegrowers' Association.
The building of the former electoral salt cellar is located in Hochstreet, opposite Salhofplace. The Salkellerei is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The oldest parts date from the 14th, maybe even the 13th century. The tithe levy, including wine and grain, was stored in the saline cellar until 1845. These formed the so-called tax in kind, which was demanded by the sovereign. Parts of the outer walls of the cellar building and the 8 x 8 large, stately basement with a height of 4.50 meters are still preserved. The saloon cellar has a central column that supports the cross vault. Next to it is another room of the same size. The Oberlahnsteiner Winzerverein used the cellar rooms until 1972. There the wine barrels lay in two rows one above the other. Most of the barrels were piece barrels with a volume of up to 4200 liters. Up to 43.000 liters of wine could be stored in the wine cellar. It was pressed in a large double press, which is now located at the Pulverturm in Hintermauergasse. Because of the enormous depth of the saloon cellar, the cellar stairs still lead down outside the main house. The impressive basement is not yet accessible to visitors.
