The artist applies their own image idea to the respective printing block using the selected process. This printing block is printed, i.e. reproduced. Nevertheless, it is an original (print). Especially if the artist has created the print from their own idea to the finished print. What is lithography? Lithography is a flat print. The printing and non-printing parts are at the same height. Alois Senefelder discovered the process of lithography in 1798. The principle of lithography is based on the property that fat and water repel each other. The drawing on the Solnhofen limestone slate is produced using greasy inks and chalks. The finished drawing is chemically treated, i.e. etched. Once these processes have been completed, the stone is alternately moistened with water and rolled in with greasy colour. The stone is then printed on paper using a special lithographic press.
