Association for the reconstruction, preservation and decoration of the old parish church ‘St. Martin The Förderverein St. Martin Kirche Linz /Rh.e.V. is a non-profit, interdenominational association with currently 80 members, which was founded on 25 June 1985 by 40 citizens of Linz under the leadership of its long-standing chairman Willi Kill in order to support the renovation of the old parish church, which had been in disrepair since the end of the 1960s. After 7 years of hard, physical work in and around St Martin's Church, it was reopened for prayer and visits in 1992. In the years that followed, the work of the association focussed on safeguarding the church treasures and researching the architecture and history of this late Romanesque-early Gothic pillar-and-porch basilica. Highlights were the two celebrations, together with the city of Linz, in 2006 for the ‘800th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of St Martin Linz’ and in 2014 for the ‘8ooth anniversary of the consecration of the church’. At the same time, the restoration of the murals in the nave, which date back to around 1240, took place during the winter months of 2013 to 2016. Since 1992, the association has made it possible to open the church for prayer and sightseeing on a voluntary basis, offers guided tours of the architecture and history of the church, including for children in the programme with the church mouse, and exhibits parts of the church treasure every year, such as the Linz Missal from 1434 and the Linz Antiphonary from 1400. In addition, art exhibitions and concerts by German and international artists are organised in St. Martin's. Since 2020, St. Martin's Church has once again served as the main Catholic church in Linz, as St. Mary's Church had to be deconsecrated due to the risk of collapse.
