Until the beginning of the 20th century raftsmen (Flößer) steered huge timber rafts down the river to the shipyards in Holland. These rafts were up to 220 m long and 60 m wide. The museum tells the story of the everyday life of the raftsmen and Rhine skippers. A collection of historical photographs, models, anchors, hooks and ropes gives visitors an impression of just how hard the raftsman’s life was.

The heyday of rafting on the Rhine began as early as the 17th century. Some rafts were even over 500m long and 70m wide with up to 5 layers of logs, also known as "Holländerflöße." Maneuvering such large rafts required up to 500 rafters and assistants.
They spent the night in huts on a raft.

The Rafter and Boatmen Museum in Kamp-Bornhofen displays exhibits from the era of rafting and steam navigation, provided by the citizens of Kamp. The museum was established in 1968 by the Rafter and Boatmen Association Kamp-Bornhofen e.V. with the support of the local community.
