Roman World Adventure Museum in Rheinbrohl - History with a difference!

"An experience for all the senses!" is how the museum's exhibition on life on the Limes can be described. You can touch and try things out at the activity stations. There is a lot to discover in the outdoor area, especially about Roman crafts. On event days, the craft stations such as the blacksmith, stonemason or bakery are busy.

Roman World - Experience history!

Experience with all the senses! - That is the motto in the Roman World at the UNESCO World Heritage Limes in Rheinbrohl. In the exhibition, in which visitors can explore everyday life on this border, you can find out at the activity stations of the adventure museum which goods were exchanged, what the soldiers' service at the guard post looked like and what civilians and military wore. What is the LIMES, how does it run and what equipment did the auxiliary soldiers wear? You can experience for yourself how much a chain mail weighs and what the women wore. Discover and try out - the Roman World is a popular excursion destination for young and old!

After opening in 2008, the outdoor area was constantly expanded. Since then, in addition to the herb garden, a craft house with Roman crafts such as stonemasonry and blacksmithing in the first area has also complemented the outdoor area. The Roman glassworks has also been located here since 2023. In addition to a representation of the border fortifications with palisade, ditch and rampart, visitors will find a soldier's room, the contubernium and a small workshop with ancient representations of fishing equipment in the upper area of the event area. A Roman pile driver provides information about Caesar's bridge construction over the Rhine and a cargo crane, a pentaspastos, demonstrates the loading of heavy loads such as stone blocks or logs. Another highlight is the popular bakery with reconstructed ovens, which are regularly fired up at events and in which bread is baked according to Roman recipes. An attractive playground and picnic area round off the offer for families. The craft stations are lively on the days of the event. Guided tours, workshops and creative offers can be found in the annual program and can also be booked as a children's birthday party and for groups.

Hiking:

Roman World Trail & Limes educational trail - Hiking at the beginning of the Limes World Heritage Site

Background: 2000 years ago, the Limes, a Roman border wall, ran not far from the current location of the Roman World. The Limes meets the Rhine near the Rhine at watchtower no. I in Rheinbrohl. The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes is 550 km long and begins in Rheinbrohl. From here it leads through four federal states to the Danube. In 2005, the Limes was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to visiting the Roman World Adventure Museum and Limes Information Center in Rheinbrohl, the "Roman World Trail", designed as a circular route, encourages you to explore the Limes in the adjacent Rheinbrohl Forest. The starting point is at the Roman World in the Arienheller district.

From here, the path leads for a total of 8.4 km, initially identical to the Limes hiking trail and Westerwaldsteig up the hill and then branches off to the south at the forest school and WP 1/8. Up to this point, the hiker has already passed visible parts of the original course of the Limes as well as some marked places of former watchtowers. At the forest school, those interested in the Limes can then expect the excavation site of the WP 1/8 tower, a reconstructed Limes passage with palisade, rampart and ditch, as well as a Limes educational trail with display boards and further information on the structure and function of the Limes. With a view of the walkable wooden tower at the site of WP 1/9 on the Beulenberg, this is a good place for a long break. The walkable wooden tower is reminiscent of the early wooden towers on the Limes in its appearance and can be reached via a detour of around 500 m. It offers a wonderful view towards the Eifel and Westerwald. The way back via the RömerWeltWeg now leads back towards Arienheller, past the peace cross with a view of the Rhine Valley and the Eifel.

A visit to the RömerWelt before or after the hike is worthwhile, as here the visitor is introduced to the comprehensive topic of the Romans and the Limes in an interactive and playful way.
