The Municipal Archives administer archival and collection material of the city of Linz and the towns of the former parish of Linz, later mayoralty, as well as of private individuals, associations, companies, etc. such as documents and files, official books, maps and plans, photos and films, manuscripts, bequests and graphics from the early 14th century onwards. Most of the holdings can be searched via the archive's online database. With several hundred volumes, the archive library forms an extensive collection on Rhenish and especially Linz (city) history.

The City Archive is located in the former Servitessen Church on Dr.-Sigmund-Wolf-Platz in the historic city centre of Linz. Parking spaces are signposted around the city centre, and there is a public multi-storey car park directly below the archive. Short-term parkers can also use the directly adjacent supermarket car park for a maximum of 1.5 hours. It is only a few minutes' walk from the railway station.

The archive can be used by anyone for scientific, local history or genealogical purposes. All services of the archive as well as the use of the archive are largely free of charge. An online database with an order function is available for convenient research from home. In addition to advising and assisting visitors, telephone or written enquiries (by post or email) are also answered during opening hours. Copies can be made for € 0.25 per DIN A4 page.
