Burg Reichenberg
Burg Reichenberg, 56357 Reichenberg
Even if it’s relatively unknown nationwide due to its position in Hasenbachtal, Reichenberg Castle is one of the most important and most unusual castle complexes in the whole of Rhineland Palatinate.
Although largely unknown beyond the region due to its location in the Hasenbach Valley, Reichenberg Castle is one of the most significant and unusual castle complexes in all of Rheinland-Pfalz.
It possesses a remarkable structure, and many aspects of late medieval castle architecture can be read from this monument dating back to the early 14th century. Above all, the dominant, Mannerist curtain wall with its once unusually high flanking towers - the northern one collapsed only about 40 years ago - represents a peculiar feature in late medieval castle construction.
To this day, the hall building with its ceiling resting on cube capitals bears witness to the high level of representation of the complex. Thus, the builders, Count Wilhelm I of Katzenelnbogen and his son Wilhelm II, created an architectural highlight with the venerable curtain wall castle.
The ruin is privately owned and can only be visited from the outside.
