Aussichtspunkt Büttenplatz
55430 Urbar
Shelter on the Büttenplatz in Urbar with a view of the town of Oberwesel and the vineyards on the Oelsberg as far as the Hunsrück heights.
In the steep slopes of the Urbar Beulsberg, it was not possible until the 19th century to build roads that could be driven on with teams. The harvested grapes had to be laboriously carried upwards on their backs with so-called leeches. Therefore, still in the vineyard, but in an easily accessible area - a larger place was built. There stood the ladder wagons, usually harnessed to cows, with 2 - 3 vats, into which the winegrowers could fill their harvest. They could also help each other with the supervision of the animals and had more helpers available in the vineyard. The place also offered itself for a common breakfast and so one had the idea to build a suitable weather protection. Since both the World Heritage Trail, the Rhine Castle Hiking Trail, and the Middle Rhine Dream Loop pass by this place, the refuge is now mainly used by hikers as a resting place. From here, there is a magnificent view of the Rhine bend at the Roßstein on the right bank of the Rhine and Oberwesel.
